Why Is My Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air?

Air from a heat pump can feel cooler than the air from some other heating systems even while it is warming the house. A short change in operation during a defrost cycle can also be normal. The more useful question is whether the indoor temperature is holding steady or falling.

Is it normal for a heat pump to blow cool air?

Sometimes. During a normal defrost cycle, the outdoor unit briefly clears frost. Depending on the system, you may notice a change in the air at the vents. If the air stays cold and your home keeps getting colder, the system may need service.

Why is there ice on the outdoor unit?

Light frost can occur in cold, damp weather and should clear during defrost. Heavy ice that persists, blocks airflow, or keeps building up is a reason to call. Do not chip ice off the unit or pour hot water on it.

What can I check safely?

Confirm the thermostat is set to heat and the requested temperature is above the room temperature. Check an accessible filter and make sure supply and return vents are not blocked. Note any thermostat messages, unusual sounds, or repeated breaker trips. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker or open the unit to troubleshoot electrical parts.

When should I call?

Call if the house is getting colder, the outdoor unit remains heavily iced, the system will not run, or the breaker trips again. Tell us the thermostat reading and what you see at the outdoor unit. That helps us understand what is happening before we arrive.
