Why Is My Water Pressure Low?

Low water pressure can feel like a minor annoyance until a shower slows to a trickle. Start by checking whether the change affects one fixture, hot water only, or the whole house. That pattern helps narrow down what needs attention.

Why is the pressure low at one faucet?

The faucet's aerator or fixture may have buildup, or a valve or local supply line could be involved. Check other fixtures before assuming the problem is with the home's main supply. If the trouble is limited to hot water at one fixture, tell the plumber that too.

What if water pressure is low everywhere?

A partially closed valve, supply issue, pressure-control equipment, or a leak could be involved. Check whether neighbors are experiencing the same problem or whether the water utility has reported work nearby. A sudden whole-house change warrants a call, especially if you also see wet spots or an unexpectedly high bill.

Could low pressure mean a leak?

It can, but low pressure alone does not prove a leak. Watch for damp areas, running water sounds when fixtures are off, or a meter that moves while no water is being used. EPA WaterSense describes the water meter as one way to help check for a possible household leak.

When should I call a plumber?

Call if the pressure drop is sudden, affects several fixtures, comes with visible water damage, or persists after a utility issue has been ruled out. Tell us when it began, which fixtures are affected, and whether hot and cold water behave differently.
