Why Does My Toilet Keep Running?

If your toilet keeps running after a flush, water may be passing through the tank when it should stop. A worn flapper, fill valve issue, or water flowing into the overflow tube are common possibilities. Even a quiet toilet leak can waste water over time.

Why does the toilet run on and off by itself?

Water can slowly leak from the tank into the bowl, causing the tank to refill again. A flapper that does not seal is one possible cause. Lift the tank lid carefully and watch what happens after a flush; you do not need to take anything apart to describe the problem.

How can I check for a toilet leak?

EPA WaterSense recommends a simple dye test: put a few drops of food coloring in the tank, wait without flushing, and check whether color appears in the bowl. If it does, water is leaking from the tank to the bowl. Follow the product or fixture guidance and flush afterward so dye does not sit in the tank.

Why is water going into the overflow tube?

The tank may be filling too high or the fill mechanism may not be shutting off properly. The exact adjustment or part depends on the toilet. If you are unsure, let a plumber inspect it rather than guessing at a repair.

When should I call a plumber?

Call if the toilet keeps running, the tank or floor leaks, the toilet will not flush correctly, or a repair does not hold. Water on the floor deserves prompt attention, especially near flooring and walls that can be damaged.
